Ha-Hozeh mi-Lublin, Widzący z Lublina, Lubliner, Lublin – pod takimi imionami znany jest rabi Jakub Icchak Horowic. Na jego grobie na starym cmentarzu żydowskim w Lublinie, wyryto: "To jest dzień śmierci świętego męża, chluby naszych czasów czcigodnego rabbiego, pobożnego i sławnego, od krańca do krańca świata." Ciągle pielgrzymują tu chasydzi z całego świata. "Był jednym z największych cadyków w historii chasydyzmu, który dla swoich chasydów jest, Axis Mundi, środkiem swiata, kimś, kto z racji swojej świętości stoi najbliżej Boga" – pisał o Lublinerze Władysław Panas.

Jakub Icchak Horowic urodził się w Józefowie Biłgorajskim w 1745 roku, ale to z Lublinem zrosło się jego imię. Tutaj spędził ostatnie 30 lat swojego życia. Zanim trafił do Lublina, pobierał nauki u znamienitych cadyków. Wówczas to ujawnił się jego wielki dar, jakim było czytanie przeszłości, przewidywanie przyszłości, a także „widzenie” ludzi lub zdarzeń w najodleglejszych miejscach.

W latach 90. XVIII w. Widzący osiedlił się na Wieniawie koło Lublina. Popularność przyniósł mu nie tylko dar widzenia, lecz także moc uzdrawiania. Rosnące grono zwolenników cadyka sprawiło, iż zdecydował się na przeniesienie swojego dworu do Lublina pomimo konfliktu z miejscowym rabinem. Lubelscy Żydzi oczekiwali, że sława Horowica spłynie na mieszańców miasta i uroczyście wprowadzili go do domu przy ulicy Szerokiej 28. Sam Widzący wybrał ten adres w oparciu o wiedzę kabalistyczną. Twierdził, że jest to miejsce, w którym niebo łączy się z piekłem: "Z moich obliczeń wynika, że Lublin jest pępkiem świata. To miasto stanowi kosmiczne centrum, Nową Jerozolimę, którą Jahwe upatrzył dla swego ludu." Pielgrzymowali więc do niego pobożni chasydzi ufając, że dzięki wstawiennictwu cadyka dostąpią łaski Pana.

Lubliner zmarł w 1815 roku w niewyjaśnionych okolicznościach, ale jego legenda wciąż trwa. W miejscu, gdzie stał jego dom, jest dzisiaj pusty plac, któremu nadano kształt oka. „Oko” lubelskiego cadyka ciągle patrzy na święte miasto.

Ha-Hozeh mi-Lublin, The Seer of Lublin, The Lubliner, Lublin – these are the many names that Jacob Isaac Horowitz is known and identified by. His grave in the old Jewish cemetery in Lublin bears the following inscription: This is the day of the demise of a sacred man, the glory of our times, an honourable and pious rabbi, a world-renowned man. To this day, Hasidim from every corner of the globe make his grave the objective of their pilgrimages. This is how Władysław Panas described the Lubliner: He was one of the greatest tzadiks in the history of Hasidism; to fellow Hasidim, he constitutes the Axis Mundi, the centre of the world, somebody that – because of his righteousness – is closest to God.

Jacob Isaac Horowitz was born in Józefów Biłgorajski in 1745, but it was with Lublin, where he spent thirty years, that his name became inextricably linked. Before he settled in Lublin, he was schooled by eminent tzadiks and during that time his gift of reading the past, prophesying the future, and “seeing” events in the most far-flung places came into being.

In the 1790s, the Seer moved to Wieniawa near Lublin. His popularity grew not only due to his clairvoyance skills but to his power of healing as well. As the number of his followers was steadily on the rise, he decided to move his headquarters to Lublin despite his conflict with a local rabbi. The Lublin Jews expected that the fame that Horowitz enjoyed would rub off on the residents of the city and ceremoniously introduced him to the lodgings at 28 Szeroka Street. The Seer himself selected this particular address on the strength of his Kabbalah expertise. To him, this was the place where heaven merged with hell: According to my research, Lublin is the navel of the world. The city constitutes the cosmic centre – the New Jerusalem that Yahweh chose for his people. Back in the day, righteous Hasidim travelled to Lublin to reach Horowitz in hopes that the tzadik would intercede on their behalf and that they would in turn win God’s favour.

The Lubliner passed away in 1815 in unexplained circumstances, but his legend lives on. Today, the site where his house used to stand is nothing but an empty square, which has been shaped to resemble an eye. The eye of the Seer of Lublin continues to gaze at the sacred city
